The Indifference of a Girlfriend
I eventually ramped up my indifference and avoidance towards the end of the break. I finally told him two days before we were to return to school that I didn't want to be his girlfriend anymore - it was like ripping off a band-aid. He reached down into his shabby black backpack that was sitting on the floor, propped up next to the legs of the desk; he came back up a few seconds later with a paperclip. And after he sat staring forward for a minute or two he looked at me and said, I love you. But that's never going to be enough for girls like you.
