The History of the Japanese Military Code

The imperial Japanese emphasised the importance of individual conviction in waging war. Their forces earned a reputation for fanatical attacks, atrocities against Chinese civilians and allied prisoners of war. The contemporary condemnation avoided analysis and labelled them simply demonic. But trying to reach an understanding of the phenomenon requires an evaluation of the culture that was its context.
