Glass: I strongly believe that, you know, minimal organisms will be in a sense very brittle. That is, if you change the environment, they can't handle a lot of that change. There's a species of bacteria called the bukneras that are fairly closely related to E. coli. And as a result, they could shed almost everything in their metabolism. They also have very small genomes. So basically this is a reduction in size of a factor of 4 to 5 in terms of metabolism.
