Introduction

Sir Ernest Shackleton's Endurance was sunk in the Antarctic on October 27th, 1915. The crew of 27 were forced to abandon their ship and swim 1200 miles for help. In his diary Maclin describes how he felt a 'horrible, sickening sensation' during that time. He also writes about what it must have been like to be one of those men who had to watch her sink.
