The History of Balloons

The Confederate army tried to make use of balloons as well, including the gazelle. The balloon was captured by federal forces on the James River after only a couple of months in service and that he is cut it apart and gave away the scraps. During World War I, Professor Robert A. Milliken of the US Army Signal Corps and the National Research Council proposed the development of balloon bombers. Although these went through development and testing, they were ultimately used only to drop propaganda leaflets not to drop bombs.
