In 1855, Joseph Emerson Worcester published a pronouncing and synonymous dictionary of the English language. On in 1860, he published a four volume dictionary of theEnglish language. During his lifetime, Worcester's dictionaries were really well respected. He defaulted to British standards when there just wasn't really a clear consensus.
