The Importance of Mother Language Day

When India was partitioned, bungler speaking population protested Urdu would be the one and only official language of this new state of Pakistan. This led to a major protest in 1952 that was led by students of the University of Dhaka. The police opened fire and killed five and injured hundreds of the protesters who were there. International Mother Language Day is recognized by the United Nations on February 21st every year as a way of celebrating linguistic and cultural diversity.
