Until around the mid 1700s, the idea to explain these things was dominated by concepts like effluvium or this basically this two fluid theory of electricity and magnetism. And it's a great example of the whole process of physics of trying to coalesce many different things down into one explanation. I imagine even cavemen would get static electricity in their hair would stand up. But for them, it was probably just magic or they had no way to grasp that there would be a reason for that. Exactly.
