What Happened in a Naval Battle?

Sailors on both sides were hives of activity as they slowly moved towards each other. Sand would have been spread over the decks, partly to help sailors grip the floor and also to soak up blood. Down below in ships you would have had surgeons preparing their tools for likely injuries. In these sort of ship-on-ship actions, that natural instinct between fight or flight was removed because there's nowhere to run.
