The Power of the Thylacine Jaw
The Thylacine jaw is rather unusual. In the first place they could open it at an 80 degree angle so almost a full 90 degree right angle. They would sometimes warn people away by opening their mouths really wide in a kind of threat yawn and showing their teeth. Their stomachs also were expandable which meant that they could gorge themselves in a single feeding so that they wouldn't have to eat again for a longer period of time. But despite these features at least according to some accounts their jaws were rather weak. A recent paper tried to claim that the animal had weak jaws and would only feed on small creatures like possums. This is totally at odds with contemporary field reports which said
