Dowsing is a form of rove viewing, where you look at objects in an enclosed dark space. In this case the object was contraband that had to be found before it could be used for drug research. Dowsing involves drawing diagrams and then trying to feel what feels right about them. It's really hard to sign a kind of verbal description to these things because they're so kinesthetic.
