The school of Melanie Klein and her successors stand out in particular for how they use early childhood dependency as a model to understand how feelings of envy are shaped through a person's lifetime. "Dependency refers to a basic human situation that applies to almost every moment of early childhood that which is needed most urgently is not something one has is something the other has" The emotional relationship that takes place early on between parents and child only when the child has been provided with enough emotional sustenance can it internalize the experience of existential dependency.
