In this special edit of a recent interview with Ana Rita Guerra, I discuss the potential arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI) within five to seven years, while highlighting the benefits of intelligent assistance for practical tasks such as emissions control, protein folding, and translation, which can significantly boost efficiency and economic impact.
However, I express concern about the societal and policy challenges posed by AGI, including over-dependence, disinformation, and job displacement. Drawing comparisons to the development of nuclear technology, I advocate for an AGI non-proliferation agreement and regulation to ensure responsible use of AGI. I conclude with cautious optimism for technological solutions to global issues but express pessimism about achieving the necessary global collaboration.
