The Origins of Stoicism
Stoicism emerged from the pre-socratic world of mystics, rhetoricians and poets. The Stoics were famously committed to the view that you could be happy on the torture rack. They believe virtue is a knowledge of how to live in accordance with nature. When we act unvirtuously, they say, this is when we are not understood by our own nature or cosmic nature.
