In Marianne Twinnett's final letters do we get a sense that she ever knew what her fate was going to be? Did she believe she would die or did she think that there was a way out until the very end? My alternate is very much convinced at different stages during the time when she's in Paris that she will die. And I think that her consciousness of her fate is something which gives her an occasion to show the depth of her character.
