"I had a very challenging relationship with my mother growing up and I feel like I always was very interested in people who are raised in fundamentalist religions," he says. " breaking free from the construct of what my mother had sort of created for me was similar to how I felt about coming out as gay, which wasn't my life" He feels some degree of understanding and empathy because we've never had an example of a true supportive community that our ancestors had at some point.
