The conventional historical explanation of this thing is that it's a collection bowl for drainage water, which is really a travesty. And I've been in probably 15 or 20 other structures in Egypt that have tons of bats that have absolutely no staining and absolutely zero smell of ammonia. The chemical analysis of this staining material has absolutely nothing to do with bats. It is a combination of iron oxide, strontium, and about 40 different rare exotic metals that are extruding from the stone.
