The Importance of Immunity in the Justice System
The presumption of innocence is something more in theory than in fact. Part of it is just basic human nature and the way that our brains are wired to respond when we hear an accusation being made against someone by an institution that we find credible. It's one reason you see so many people who are factually innocent end up taking some kind of plea, usually to probation. That seems what a rational person would likely do even if he knew himself to be completely innocent of whatever charges was facing.
