The Limits of Being a Sports Writer
When you were covering those fights, did you feel aware of the limitations of being a sports writer then compared to what you wanted to write about? No. If I hadn't lost that job by the magazine falling out from under me, I would have kept on doing it and never written another novel in my life. The great American tradition of sports writing was essentially fandom. But now the game is to look for friction because everybody can see for themselves. And so does the cell. You need to find friction. In boxing there's something incomparably dramatic about human instincts which are vastly more powerful than any other emotion or instinct we've ever seen.
