Behind the Bastards

CHAPTER

Oscar Duralanger's World War I

Oscar Duralanger was thrust into the battle at a time when losses were their most nightmarish. In order to kind of contextualize his experience, I'm going to read a firsthand account from a young officer named Harold McMillan who later becomes prime minister. Christian Ingrale writes: Perhaps the most extraordinary thing about the modern battlefield is the desolation and emptiness of it all. Nothing is to be seen of war or soldiers, only the split and shattered trees and the burst of an occasional shell reveal anything of the truth.
