E.P. Sanders argued that what Jesus has claimed is not to be God, he's claiming to have greater authority than the priests. But just as the priest can forgive sins, actually Jesus can. And in fact, near the end of the gospel narratives, we have Jesus sending his disciples to spread his message, but also giving them the power to forgive sins. If you have authority, somebody's given you the authority.
