Walter Jekyll was an aristocrat from Britain who had moved out to Jamaica maybe around 1890. McKay grew up within that type of milieu his brother was very keen on good books and reading keeping up with the news with advanced ideas. Walter Jekyll played a important role in giving McKay confidence in writing his poetry in his native language right in the Creole language. He advocated the idea of an income tax so that rich people pay more money for the upkeep of the island.
