Is the Force of Law for Professional Licensure a Good Idea?
I prefer professional organizations and professional standards rather than legal ones. I don't take the libertarian view that credentialing and licensure processes are really just a cartel arrangement to privilege people. The fact that we have modern medicine, instead of folk medicine and quack medicine, which came before it fundamentally has to do with the creation of medical organizations like the American Medical Association in the 1800s. It's especially tricky right now when you've got a lot of conservatives who are trying to use the state to impose standards on universities. That's direct government intervention in the curriculum and in academic standards is a clear threat to academic freedom and to the constitution and knowledge.
