Putin's Political Career in Ennegrad

There's oral evidence and circumstantial evidence that he was, before he left East Germany to go back to Russia. He doesn't seem to have been at any time a communist. It's very difficult to find even a tiny grain of genuine enthusiasm or belief in the communist system at any point even in Putin's youth.
