And then go with what decision scientists call the expected value. He says a donation of $3,500 to the Against Malaria Foundation will save a life statistically. Klein: Sometimes people hear that and they're like, Oh, I thought it cost $5 to save a life. That's because charities often give very optimistic numbers.
