Lactate in the Lactated Ringers Is a Source of Alkali

Lactate and glutamate have stronger binding affinity for the hydrogen ion than something like an acid, like a sulfuric acid does. Sulfuric acid is going to completely dissociate and solution and release its hydrogen. And so when we give lactated ringers, we're not giving lactic acid. We're giving sodium lactate. The metabolism of sodium lactate absorbs hydrogen. It absorbs hydrogen so it is an source of alkaline. That's the whole point of lactate in the lactated ringer is it's a source of alkali.
