History and belonging: life in a Chinese mega-city
Chinese Whispers
00:00
What's the Problem With China's Urbanization?
There's a contempt for very local kind of authority which actually is quite interesting. They're like the neighborhood busy bodies almost. Even those people who live in high-rise buildings will come downstairs and you'll find lots of people shelling nuts or whatever, doing small-scale business to make an extra bob or two. But I think the other thing to say is that China, rather than being this kind of wonderful communal lifestyle which I was imagining when I went there 10 years ago, it's actually as if Ayn Rand had created a country, then China would be it.
