The First Buddhist Council

After the Buddha disappeared into the rearview mirror, everybody decided that they had improvements and they didn't need that rule or that rule. By the first Buddhist council 100 years later, things had gone off the rails. There were now monks that were not practicing what the Buddha had taught. This was the first schism of the order. Very bad. So they went away. And so100 years later, there's people changing things. But if they're not practicing in the right way with the right effort, it doesn't work. The key is to be doing something else while you are being created all the time. That's how Bonti got tranquilized as he walked down the road
