John Quincy Adams was a former president of the United States and son of Abigail Adams. He spoke out in support of abolitionist Frederick Douglass during his time as an African-American enslaved man on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The Dixie dominated government adopted a resolution stating that enslaved people did not possess the First Amendment right to petition. Years later, a man recalled hearing about the petition as a teenager.
