How Hitchens Can Save the Left, Rediscovering Fearless Liberalism in an Age of Counter Enlightenment

Matt Welch: I think there's a new parochialism on the right. You have people like Victor Orbon and Trump, who just flagrantly rejects democracy is no friend of free speech. And then you have these liberal trends on the left. They write as if race and gender and sexuality are just about the only critical variables for political mobilization and action. These are both very powerful anti-enlightenment currents, I would argue.
