The Importance of a Conductor
Most good professional orchestras can play a large chunk of the orchestral repertoire without a conductor at all. Most orchestral musicians, especially the string players, rarely actually look directly at the conductor. The act of beating time is more complicated than just telling the orchestra which beat they are on in a specific piece. For an orchestra keeping time together is also a basic foundational skill that you learn very early on.
