The History of Quantum Dots

In the mid-90s, a team of researchers made flat quantum dots that could be filled with electrons starting from zero. They were also coined artificial atoms because they obey certain rules like Hoon's rule in atomic physics. In 1998, Daniel Los and David Yves Gensor wrote their proposal on spin qubits. The idea was actually very simple: Put a single electron in a quantum dot, then its spin forms a two-level system,. So you have a level splitting, the spin forms a 2-level system, and that's your qubit.
