When paganism struggled to retain its cultural standing in the face of a new faith, christianity, it was put forth with vehemence and sudden success. Adherents of traditional religion could not help seeing the christians as disruptive fanatics. The sceptics suspended belief about the nature of the gods along with everything else. There was no place for such views in the religious ferment of the later empire. As monotheists, they simply would not play well with others. This led to violent conflict between jews and romans and even more violent conflict between romans and christians. And then finally, imperium in the early fourth century, constantine changed the roman empire
