The China History Podcast

CHAPTER

The Dutch East India Company in Taiwan

In 1623, the Dutch traders had managed to step on enough toes along the Fucian coast. After intense fighting that lasted into July 1624, the Qingbak forces defeated the Dutch on Punghu and forced them to vacate. Part of the shakeout from all this was that the Dutch were given the okay to settle on Taiwan and to carry out trade with China. So off to Taiwan they went in 1624, and right on the southwest coast in Anping County in the city of Tainan, they built their Fort Zillandia. The fort became a symbol of this period when the Dutch East India Company dominated the history and destiny of Taiwan.
