Stoicism was a philosophy that flourished for about 500 years in the ancient world. The Stoics believed that our, it's our thinking, our beliefs, the cause and emotions to a large extent. So if I just think anxiety is like an energy or a blob of emotion, I don't know what do I do with it? they're trying to vent it. They're trying to suppress it. And so once you realize that emotions are cognitive, it opens up a whole toolbox of techniques that you can use.
Elliot Chung, a student at Phillips Academy Andover, interviewed me recently for his new Philosophy for the Modern Mind podcast, and we decided to share our conversation on this podcast as well. We talk in particular about how Stoicism could be of practical benefit to young people, and the challenges they face today.
