The Importance of Charity and Guilt

Hallowell's lover Joe Orton only partly understood his lover's deterioration. His attempt to help Hallowell launch a career in art registered for what it was, charity, and guilt. Only a minority can succeed at the game of life, and that minority inevitably arouses the envy of those around them. The most obvious type of people who create envy are guilty when it arises as they crow about their good luck or get pleasure out of making other people feel inferior. There are others, however, who stir up envy in more subtle and unconscious ways which are partly to blame for their troubles. Never underestimate the power of envy.
