The Difference in Differences Technique
difference in differences is the most popular method a among studies from economics that use mercomunitary data. They all rely on the idea of a natural experiment, where people are not put into control or treatment groups. One study looked at immigrants from guatemala and found there was no difference between two thousand emigrants who came in one cut-off group compared to those who didn't. The results don't seem outrageously large to me; they're pretty reliable.
