The Flight Crew's Concern About the Fuel State
The crew could have radioed and asked for a weather report, either from the tower or from other pilotsike there's no reason that they should not have been able to get up dated weather. One of the possible reasons for the flight crew's delay in expressing concern may have been a misconception about the significance of the expected further clearances issued by air traffic control. It wasn't until air traffic control told them to expect further clearance at nine o five that the crewd realized they would have to do an approach with priority handling. By the time they realized it, they'd already exhausted their fuel reserve to the point where they couldn't reach boston.
