The Tension Between Rangers and Locals in Fragile States

African parks is a public-private hybrid conservation NGO that maintains its own standing armed ranger force in over a dozen countries. They're technically a non-profit, but they function outside of direct state management. Each of these parks are in a very different security and political kind of context. You have some parks that are in very peaceful areas where maybe the primary thread is small-scale hunting or encroachment by loggers. And then you have other parks that they work in, in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the Central African Republic, Chad and Benin.
