The Unusual Experience of a Legal History Major

Bob Gordon: I wanted to ask about your education because yours is, as legal historians go, fairly unusual in the sense that you also have a PhD. He says he was an American studies major at Amherst College before going on to Yale and Harvard law schools. In those days, "legal history" wasn't regarded as an attractive thing to teach or do scholarship; most law schools were resistant to hire somebody who was doing legal history. But when his daughter Susan went to law school, they moved from New York to Virginia so she could get early admission.
