When I was younger, I could eat a huge meal right before bed and sleep like a baby. Now if I eat after 7 p.m., I'm screwed. And I sleep terribly and I wake up with a headache. So things are very different. Even as we age, we don't have to do as much fitness as we used to when we were younger. We're trying to find the peak benefit before we see diminishing returns.
