To Joel Barlow, an American in France, business is booming. Shipping supplies to moving armies on both sides has become Missou Barlow's prime focus. So when he receives a sealed letter from a general of the republican army of the West, he makes his way to meet him at once. Both the new republican army and the loyalist guard have had to resort to violence and depravity to get where they are right now.
