The ruling class in history finds itself an impossible position. In the not too distant future there would be forced to allow the Communist Party to come into the government again, as they did in 1944, 1947. This is the epoch of revolution, of counter-revolution without parallel and without precedent in the whole of history. And this is the period that Trotsky was confidently expecting would take place after or during the Second World War. The petty bourgeois and the peasantry in Europe are much shrunken of what they were in the period before the war. It's a period when it is impossible for the bourgeoisie easily to organise the reaction"
