The President's Crackdown on Gangs in El Salvador
The problem of gangs goes back decades in El Salvador. It really started during the Civil War there, which was from 1979 to 1992. And it was there that a whole group of Salvadorians were sort of recruited and set up two gangs,. One was called MS-13 and the other Bario-18. In 2015, the murder rate in El Salvador was around 100 per 100,000 population - the highest in the world at the time.
