The Study of Search Processes in Artificial Intelligence Research

During the first decade or so of artificial intelligence research, the study of problem solving was almost synonymous with the study of search processes. Consider a set of symbol structures, some small subset of which are solutions to a given problem. No information exists that would enable any search generator to perform better than a random search,. Then no symbol system could exhibit more intelligence than any other in solving the problem.
