The End of Anti-Semitism in the United States
As the conflict wore on, the rhetoric of the militants became even more stridently anti-Semitic. Protesters showed up to union events and shouted that the Jewish teachers were Christ killers who should go back to Israel. When one of Lindsay's aides showed up at a school where union teachers were picketing, the teachers threw up Nazi salutes at him. After a 27-hour marathon negotiation, a settlement was reached between Mayor Lindsay and Al Shanker with the state Commissioner of Education acting as guarantor for the agreement.
