The Importance of Animals in Central Asia

A small household of about five can be supported by a herd of about a hundred animals. Society, it seems, began to be loosely organized into clans and into larger groupings of clans that we can roughly call tribes. There were particularly clans of higher status than others. And there were leaders, mostly men, who were kind of chieftains, and who could expect service and tribute from their subordinates.
