The History of the Parfannon Sculptures

Lord Elgin was the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century. He received a permit from the Ottomans to examine and remove some of the marble sculptures found on the Parfannon. The Marbles, as they became known, were transported to the UK and after a government investigation into their origins sold to the British Museum in 1816.
