In a conflict as tribal as the troubles, it may be had some kind of soothing effect to speculate or imagine that the worst horrors were nothing to do with your friends and neighbours. I'd even reason that this is backed up by the fact that despite all the headlines about witchcraft, this panic was never a witch hunt. Nobody was ever accused of dabbling in the dark arts, beyond some murmurs about anonymous wayward youths.
