In 1996, Bin Laden was running out of places to hang his hat. He'd been stripped of his Saudi Arabian citizenship thanks to his outspoken criticism of the Saudi monarchy. Most countries in the Middle East didn't want to take him either because he was considered a troublemaker and it would result in the CIA sniffing around in their backyards. So by 1996, bin Laden was holed up in one of the very few places that would allow him to plot, plan and operate in peace, Sudan.
